Business in New Zealand

World Bank has ranked New Zealand the best place to do business. Year after year, New Zealand continues to rank at the top in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index, a ranking of how easy it is to do business in 190 economies and cities. NZ have the most business-friendly environment in the world.

As per the latest report, New Zealand is followed by Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Georgia, Norway, United States, United Kingdom and Macedonia. The World Bank’s Doing Business 2019 report looked at 314 regulatory reforms between June 2, 2017 and May 1, 2018. It found that 128 countries introduced “substantial regulatory improvements” making it “easier to do business in all areas measured”. New Zealand have one of the lowest number of procedures required to start a business. New Zealand also holds the shortest time to start a business (0.5 days).

New Zealand has business and investment opportunities in traditional and new business sectors, a well-educated and flexible workforce, and a Government actively promoting growth and innovation with a range of business and migrant-friendly policies.

The aspirants looking for setting up a business or investing in New Zealand may contact the MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment), NZTE (New Zealand Trade and Enterprise) or INZ (Immigration New Zealand) for information in details on a range of visas that allow you to run your own business, or to live and invest in New Zealand. The options may include following:
  • Investor 1 Resident Visa

If you have NZ $10 million to invest in New Zealand over a 3-year period, you can apply for New Zealand residence. If you’re granted residence you can come to New Zealand with your family and enjoy our unique lifestyle.

  • Investor 2 Resident Visa
Experienced business people who have a minimum of NZ $3 million in available funds or assets can apply for New Zealand residence. Before you can apply, INZ will first need you to send us an Expression of Interest telling us about your business experience and investment. If your Expression of Interest is successful, INZ will invite you and your partner and dependent children to apply for New Zealand residence.
  • Entrepreneur Resident Visa
This visa is for people who have been self-employed in New Zealand at least 6 months, or have operated a business for two years on another visa that allows self-employment.
  • Entrepreneur Work Visa
This visa is for people who want to work in their own business in New Zealand. To apply, you’ll need to provide a detailed business plan, have at least NZ $100,000 to invest in your business and be able to claim 120 points on our points scale. If you’re granted this visa, you can buy or set up a business without living here permanently, or as a first step towards New Zealand residence.
  • Business Visitor Visa
You can visit New Zealand for business reasons. You’ll need to have enough money to live on while you’re in New Zealand, or have the financial support of your employer. While you’re here, you can enjoy New Zealand’s scenery, adventure, culture and friendly people.
  • Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa
If you have NZ $750,000 to invest in New Zealand for 2 years, another NZ $500,000 to live on, and an annual income of NZ $60,000, you can stay longer than allowed on a standard Visitor Visa. If INZ approves your application in principle, you’ll have 3 months to transfer your investment funds to New Zealand.
  • Parent Retirement Resident Visa
If you have an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, you can apply to live in New Zealand permanently. You’ll need an annual income of NZ $60,000 plus NZ $1 million to invest for 4 years, and another NZ $500,000 to live on. Once you’ve completed the 4-year investment period, you’ll be eligible for permanent residence.
  • Global Impact Work Visa
Entrepreneurs and Investors accepted into the Edmund Hillary Fellowship can apply to Immigration New Zealand for a Global Impact Work Visa. This visa gives you the flexibility to work and live in New Zealand while establishing or supporting innovative ventures here. This visa is also a pathway to permanent residence.
  • APEC Business Travel Card
If you’re an APEC Business Travel cardholder intending a short stay, you can come to New Zealand to carry out trade and investment activities. You’ll need to have clearance from your home economy and New Zealand before you travel. While you’re here, you can enjoy New Zealand’s scenery, adventure, culture and friendly people.
